Mexico is a celebrated land of vibrant culture, tradition and adventure. For a real taster of Mexico, travel through the vast Sonoran Desert, stop off in the small town of Santa Ana for a hearty Mexican lunch and journey on to Hermosillo to view the cathedral and murals at the Government Palace. If you love stunning sunsets, stop at San Carlos beachfront resort where you'll find cactus gardens as well as private boat rides for scenic cruises on the Sea of Cortez.

Further dry land adventure can be found in the rich farmlands of Obregon City and the Sierra Madre Mountains' colonial towns of El Fuerte and Alamos. Designated as a National Monument, Alamos's cobblestone streets are lined with Colonial and Spanish buildings and you can also meet local Mayo Indians. In El Fuerte, you'll be personally welcomed by the Torres family who'll take you to their restored 1800s mansion. Here, be treated to a performance of traditional Hispanic and Indigenous dances followed by a delicious dinner featuring local Black Bass, just caught in the El Fuerte River.

For a rural Mexican adventure, travel on the 'Train in the Sky' into Mexico's Copper Canyon. Taking almost 100 years to build in Mexico's rugged terrain, this rail line is considered to be an engineering marvel. Travel from sea level to 7,500 feet in less than 150 miles, through tunnels and soaring bridges. Voted 'Most Exciting Train Journey in the World', this train ride takes you along the Septentrion and Urique Canyons into the heart of the Copper Canyon, which is over four times as large as Arizona's Grand Canyon.

If you prefer more ancient history, try the largely unexcavated Mayan archaeological site of Ek Balam or the first capital city of the Yucatan, Valladolid. The lovely colonial city of Merida should also be explored, especially the Paseo de Montejo, which is modelled after the Champs Elysees in Paris. For more UNESCO World Heritage Sites, see Paquime, a vestige of the great Chichimeca civilization or head to the historic fortified town of Campeche to see the Bulwarks, the Puerta Tierra stone fortress and the pastel coloured historic city centre. Also investigate the Mayan archaeological site of Edzna before heading along the Puuc Route to the famed Mayan temples of Uxmal.

Don't miss the magical city of Izamal, the ancient towers of Coba or the most famous Mayan archaeological icon - and another UNESCO World Heritage site - Chichen Itza. Afterwards, relax in the oceanfront resort of Playa del Carmen on the acclaimed Riviera Maya where you can really take in the mystical wonders of Mexico you've just witnessed.
