Description

Ion Exchange Technologies
The use of various ion-exchange materials in bead form contained in pressure vessels where specific chemical changes can be achieved by passing water containing dissolved ionic substances over the ion exchange media which then exchanges certain ions for others already attached to the media. The following are specific types of Ion Exchange Technologies:-

Dealkalisation
A special resin is used to exchange the temporary hardness in the water with hydrogen ions at a high level of regenerative efficiency. It is usually followed by a degasser tower, which mechanically removes the carbon dioxide formed when the released hydrogen ions react with the alkalinity present to form carbon dioxide and water.

Demineralisation
This is a two stage process where the water goes from one vessel, that removes all the cations such as sodium, calcium, potassium and magnesium, to another vessel that removes all anions, such as sulphate, chloride, nitrate, bicarbonate and reactive silica. The water from the anion exchanger is therefore very pure and substantially free of dissolved substances.

Softening
The softening process is one of the commonest uses of ion exchange. The resin exchanges the hardness (calcium and magnesium) in the water with sodium and so no hardness remains to cause problems when used in low pressure boilers, laundries, etc.

Nitrate Removal
Nitrate removal is carried out with resin that is especially selective for the nitrate ion. The resin is regenerated with sodium chloride. Special attention is given to plant design to minimise sodium chloride and regeneration water useage to give high process efficiencies.

Organic Removal
Certain special ion exchange resins have an affinity for organic matter found naturally in certain water supplies. This material is harmless for potable use but can present problems when further water purity is required. The resin exchanges chloride ions for any charged organic radical in the water. It is usually regenerated with an alkaline brine solution.
