- In detail
The GTS system was the original rooflight system by Vitral, allowing invisble opening panels. this was, and remains unique to Vitral, with all other systems, they require additional framing that is either fitted above the rest of the glazing, or doubled up to increase the sightlines, giving an uneven appearance.
Today we use the GTS system for applications such as single glazed canopies, unheated atriums and facted rooflights.
Single Glazed Canopies
Single glazed canopies give protection from the weather to those below it. The canopy does not need to have any performance in terms of thermal effectiveness. Two factors remain, cost and appearance. With Vitral's slim slightlines being only 48mm in section it offers one of the most descreet systems available, its quick to install, as with all Vitral systems and is cost competitive.
Unheated Atriums
Some buildings need a central area covered, quite often some time after the building has been completed. Again, these are to provide protection from weather but as an unheated space, there is no need to consider thermal performance. The Vitral GTS system is ideal for this solution for all the reasons that Vitral has become so popular, slim sightlines and quick and cheaper to install and cost competitive.
It is worth considering if ventilation is required for unheated atriums. With single glazing condensation can often occur, especially on warm sunny days. To overcome this it is worth having natural ventilation. With Vitral every other panel can be opening, and the only addition to the system is the actuator. There is no extra structure, no additional cost to the roofglazing so keeping the budget as low as possible
Facteted Rooflights
Faceted rooflights often pose many design problems for architects and contractors. They can be difficult to design and difficult to arrange adequate installation so that they do not leak! The Vitral GTS system is ideal for this situation as it can form a curve with no additional structure. The system's design allows us to open the sections to a hip or valley between each panel to follow the curve of the rooflight. If we can, however, we will try to introduce a standard rooflight into the design as faceted rooflights mean expensive shaped panels and poorer U-values. When the design does need a faceted rooflight Vitral can provide an excellent solution.
